Car Care Tips for Fall

Keeping your car in top-notch condition is something we all strive to do. We are not all mechanics, but there are still some tips and tricks you can do yourself to help keep your ride ready for the cooler months ahead.

Change your wiper blades. This is a simple and affordable way to prepare for the rainy autumn months and they are easy to install. Windshield wiper solvents and weather break them down. Having a fresh set of wiper blades keeps them ready for heavy rain or snow. Make sure you check your car’s manual for the appropriate size.

Check the spare tire. You never know when you might be caught with a flat. No one wants to be out in the cold longer than they have to be, especially in an emergency situation. Make sure the tire is at proper pressure and that you can get to it without hassle. If you own a truck, the spare might be under the vehicle attached by a cable. Check this cable to see that it works properly.

Check and top off all of your fluids. This should be done on a regular basis anyway. But if you only check them occasionally, be sure all of your fluids are where they should be. Check the antifreeze, brake fluid, power steering, oil and windshield wiper fluids. The most important one to check is your antifreeze since it is imperative for colder weather.

Air filters need replacing at least twice a year as a general rule of thumb. Having a dirty air filter not only effects the quality of air you breathe in, it can cause your fuel economy and performance to decrease. It will also deteriorate your emissions until the filter is replaced.

Be sure all of your lights and battery terminals are in working order. If you notice any loose cables or corrosion, gently brush the wires with the appropriate brush and reconnect the wires. If you notice any lights are burned out or not working, replace the bulbs. Most will be fairly inexpensive with the exception of the headlight bulbs.

All of these things can be done with minimal knowledge and simple tools. If you are ever in doubt, bring your car in to the helpful staff at SouthTowne Motors. We will get you ready and back on the road in no time.
