2017 GMC Acadia Named a 2017 IIHS Top Safety Pick

Passenger safety is paramount in every vehicle, let alone a family-focused crossover like the new 2017 GMC Acadia. When equipped with the available Driver Alert Package II, the 2017 GMC Acadia is named a “2017 Top Safety Pick” by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).

A vehicle earns a 2017 Top Safety Pick designation from the IIHS by receiving “good” ratings in five different crashworthiness tests conducted by the IIHS. These tests include a small overlap front, moderate overlap front, and side-impact collisions, along with roof strength and head restraint tests. Vehicles also need to score at least an “advanced” rating for front crash prevention in order to qualify for the Top Safety Pick designation.

According to the IIHS, the 2017 Acadia received good ratings for all five crashworthiness tests. 2017 Acadia SLT-2 and Acadia Denali models are equipped with the Driver Alert II Package, which incorporates low-speed Front Automatic Braking, Forward Pedestrian Detection, and Forward Collision Alert systems as standard equipment and are part of the front crash prevention system.

From square one, GMC engineers designed the 2017 Acadia to offer driver and passengers alike with ample protection in the case of a collision. The Acadia’s body structure not only incorporates press-hardened, high-strength steels throughout its design, but also new splayed front longitudinal frame rails that flare outward in order to provide an effective structural load path during small overlap frontal collisions.

The 2017 Acadia offers an expansive suite of standard and available safety features through its entire lineup, all designed to help keep occupants safe. Standard equipment includes eight airbag (including head curtain and front side-impact airbags), four-wheel disc brakes with anti-lock braking system (ABS), Stabilitrak stability control, and full-function traction control. A rear-view camera is standard on all models.

The Driver Alert Package I, available on the Acadia SLE-2 and standard on Acadia SLT-1 models, adds a number of active safety features, including Side Blind Zone with Lane Change Alert, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, and Rear Park Assist.

Acadia’s available Driver Alert Package II, which is standard on Acadia SLT-2 and Acadia Denali models, goes a step further, supplementing the Driver Alert Package I features with the following features:

  • Forward Collision Alert, which may help warn the driver when rapidly approaching another detected vehicle and a collision may be imminent
  • Low-speed Front Automatic Braking, which can help reduce the severity or avoid a crash altogether in some situations by applying or enhancing brake effort
  • Front Pedestrian Braking, which can help reduce the severity of a collision with a detected pedestrian ahead or avoid the collision altogether
  • Following Distance Indicator, which warns the driver when following another vehicle too closely
  • Front and Rear Park Assist
  • Lane Keep Assist, which provides gentle steering wheel input and alerts to help prevent drivers from unintentionally drifting out of their intended lane
  • Safety Alert Driver Seat, which can provide haptic warnings to the driver when an alert is triggered
  • Intellibeam automatic headlamps

Acadia Denali models equipped with the optional Technology Package go further yet, adding a Surround Vision Camera system, which provides a bird’s-eye view of Acadia’s exterior. The Technology Package also adds Adaptive Cruise Control, which can alter cruising speed in order to keep a driver selected following distance from traffic; and Forward Automatic Braking which uses forward-facing cameras and radar sensors to detect collisions in some situations, and help reduce the severity or avoid a collision altogether by applying or enhancing brake efforts.

The all-new 2017 Acadia models also offer Rear Seat Reminder, which aims to give parents an extra prompt to check the rear seats for occupants or belongings before exiting the vehicle. Although Rear Seat Reminder does not actually detect passengers or objects placed in the rear seat, it works by monitoring Acadia’s rear doors. If one is opened and closed within ten minutes of the engine starting, or if they are opened and closed while the vehicle is running, Rear Seat Reminder will provide an audible and visual reminder to the driver to check the rear seat, once the engine is switched off. You should always check your rear seat before exiting the vehicle.

GM Sustainability

If a vehicle’s sustainability is important to you, then stop by SouthTowne Motors to test drive one of our GM models. GM’s 2014 Sustainability Report shows that the auto manufacturer leads in several areas.

GM’s Leading Ways

GM is the Number One automaker for voluntary carbon reductions. Though the government requires reductions, GM does it voluntarily and goes beyond the requirements. GM is also the Number One auto manufacturer with clean energy patents. It has the most of any organization since 2002.

Furthermore, GM has 122 landfill-free facilities – it is the automotive industry leader in landfill-free facilities. Seventy of its facilities meet the voluntary U.S. EPA ENERGY STAR Challenge for the industry. Additionally, 40 of this auto manufacturer’s sites around the world are certified by the Wildlife Habitat Council; and the solar footprint at 18 of its facilities are equal to the size of 104 football fields.

Customer Service and Better Communities

GM uses improved mobility to build better communities and to better serve its customers. This approach to sustainability is part of what makes GM exceptional. In 2014, GM received eight segment awards in the J.D Power 2014 Vehicle Dependability Study – more than any automaker in 2014.

Six of GM’s U.S. models deliver an EPA-estimated 40 mpg* on the highway – or better than 40 mpg. These vehicle are all Chevrolet models and include the Cruze, Cruze Eco, Sonic5, Sonic, Spark BEV and the Volt. The new 2015 Volt can travel an average of 1,000 miles between fueling as long as it is regularly charged.

GM doesn’t just do things to better itself, it also took part in local education initiatives. These initiatives mostly focused on STEM education, including the first Robotics Competition for high school students. 170 of GM’s facilities took part in this project.

Braves Baseball is Back!

Spring means baseball for some, and new cars for others. If the warmer temperatures of the season have you thinking about cars, come on down to Newnan and visit Southtowne Motors.

We thought it might be fun to take a look back at some little known history of our Atlanta Braves franchise, and relive some great memories.

The Braves trace their roots to an early baseball club located in Boston, who started out as The Redlegs in 1876. To avoid confusion with the Cincinnati baseball team, the Boston team was renamed in 1883 as the Beaneaters. The Beaneater name was thought to have a better tie-in with the Boston Community. In 1907, the Beaneaters briefly became the Doves after their new owners, a couple of brothers with the last name of Dovey. Finally, in 1912, the name was changed to The Braves.

Those early Boston Braves teams had some legendary players come on and off their rosters. Jim Thorpe played for the Braves in 1919, Rogers Hornsby and George Sisler played for them in 1928 and even Babe Ruth finished his career with the Braves in 1935. Then came another name change.

The franchise became the Bees in 1935 and kept the Bees name for 5 years before going back to the Braves moniker. In 1952, the Braves played their last game in Boston and in 1953 started play as the Milwaukee Braves. The Braves played 12 seasons in Milwaukee before coming to Atlanta for the 1966 season.

Those first years here in Atlanta featured some great and colorful players. Of course, there was the legendary “Hammerin’ Hank” Aaron but those years also gave us Phil Niekro and Rico Carty. The year 1974, of course, was the year Aaron broke the all-time homerun record, hitting number 715.

In 1977, Ted Turner actually became manager of the team after a 17 game losing streak. Turner lost the only game he managed as baseball commissioner Bowie Kuhn sent him back to the owner’s box.

The 80’s featured players like Bob Horner and Dale Murphy.

In 1991, the Braves went from worst to first, making it to the World Series just one year after having baseball’s worst record. It was the start of a golden era for Braves baseball. Another colorful player, “Neon” Deion Sanders, helped lead the club to a second consecutive World Series appearance in 1992. It was in 1995 that the Braves earned the name “Team of the 1990’s” by winning the World Series. The amazing run by the Braves that included an astonishing 14 division titles ended in 2006.

It is just about time to once again “play ball” and welcome another season of Braves baseball. If spring has you thinking about Atlanta dealers that can provide a great selection with great deals, we welcome you to our Newnan Car Dealership.
