Why Having a Road Map is Still Beneficial

Newnan road map

After you pick up your new vehicle from SouthTowne Motors of Newnan, Georgia, this spring, you’re ready to go on a road trip. However, if you choose to go someplace you’ve never been before, you might need a map or a GPS. Sometimes paper maps are better than the GPS, especially if you don’t want to go directly from point A to point B.

They’re More Affordable

Paper maps are more affordable than GPS units. Even if you buy a plug in GPS, you can expect to put out over $100. If you are on a limited budget, paper maps will get you where you’re going for much less than a GPS unit.

They’re Detailed

When you plug in a destination, the GPS will take you directly to that destination. Instead of showing you the side roads or attractions that are not on the main drag, it bypasses all of that. If you are on a road trip and want to take side trips, maps are more beneficial. And, when you do change your mind as to your destination, paper maps don’t yell at you, telling you to “turn around when possible,” and “recalculating.”

They Record Where You’ve Been

Marking up a paper map as you travel allows you to keep a record of your trip. That comes in handy when you want to revisit an attraction or out-of-the-way restaurant that you fell in love with. Or, if you loved a particular drive during a certain season, you’ll be able to mark that drive and write down the best time to take that drive again.

They Don’t Need Electricity

GPS units sometimes can’t find a satellite. But a paper map never loses its satellite. When you lose a satellite, you won’t be able to get it again unless you move from your spot. With a paper map, you’ll never be lost because of a lost satellite signal.

Items You Should Have in Your Car to be Ready for Any Situation

You should have an emergency kit in your vehicle during all seasons so you are ready for any situation. This means more than a small first aid kit. As a matter of fact, the smaller first aid kits are not enough – you should have a larger kit with supplies to handle most minor emergencies including stitches. Even if you just bought a new vehicle from SouthTowne Motors or had your vehicle serviced and feel confident that it won’t break down, you should have emergency supplies. You never know when someone could cause an accident involving you.

First Aid Kit

The first aid kit should have several different sized bandages, bandage tape, an Ace bandage, antibacterial cream, eyewash, a needle and thread, safety pins, glue, tweezers, burn cream, alcohol pads, cotton balls and wipes at a minimum. Add a clean towel and washcloth or a couple of smaller towels so you can clean wounds or use them as compresses to stop bleeding.

Extra Clothing

In the winter, you should have extra coats, gloves and hats for everyone. During all seasons, you should have blankets for everyone, though it is more important to have them during the cooler months in the event you get stranded and help isn’t near by. You’ll eventually run out of gas and the extra blankets and jackets will help keep everyone warm.

Always keep high energy, non-perishable food in the vehicle. Granola bars, chocolate bars in the winter, trail mix or anything else that won’t go bad for a month or so in the vehicle should be packed. Rotate the food stores every month or two, depending on what you are keeping. You should also keep enough bottled water so that each person has two bottles in the vehicle. Rotate the water every month so that it stays fresh.

Other Items

Keep a fire starting kit in your vehicle. Don’t rely on a lighter or matches as those can get wet. If you do get stranded in the woods, you’ll be able to make a fire for warmth or to signal for help. If you often travel in uninhabited places, a tarp to use as protection and to keep things dry will also be handy. A knife will always be handy — just be sure it’s a good, sharp knife.

Summer Road Trip Essentials

If you are planning a road trip, you’ll have to pack some essentials – and these are for emergencies. However, one other essential is a vehicle that is reliable. If you are in the market for new vehicle, stop by SouthTowne Motors to pick up a new sedan or SUV. And, if you are not ready for a new car this year, be sure you call us for a service appointment even if it is to just check your vehicle before you leave. If we find something that is going to wear out or something that could break on your trip, we’ll let you know so that you can have it repaired before you leave.

First Aid Kit and Other Medical

Be sure you have an extensive first aid kit and that none of the items are out of date. Also, if you used items on your last trip, those should be replaced before you leave, especially if you are traveling with children or a spouse that is on the clumsy side.

If anyone traveling with you is on medications, be sure you have at least a week’s worth of extra medication with you. If you planned a week-long trip but get stranded for a couple of days, you’ll need that extra medication so that you can enjoy the full vacation plus the extra days you were stranded.

Food, Water and Clothing

Even during the summer you should have extra high-energy food, extra bottles of water and an extra change of clothing with you. You could still get stranded and if you happen to get stranded where someone can’t reach you right away, you’ll be glad you have the extra food. And, even in the summer, some nights in certain places can get cool, so you’ll want some cool-weather clothing in case you have to spend a night outside or in your vehicle.

Even if you are only stuck for an hour, but have to get out in the rain to change a tire, you’ll be glad you have a change of clothing.

What to Do in an Emergency While Driving

If you have a sudden medical emergency while you are driving, you may not be able to do anything about it. The best thing you can do, in light of American Heart Month, is to take care of yourself the best you can so you hopefully prevent having heart-related incident while you are driving. Those with known heart conditions shouldn’t drive without permission from his or her doctor.

A Medical Emergency That Doesn’t Render You Unconscious

If something happens and you stay conscious, don’t continue to drive. Pull over to the side of the road or into a parking lot as soon as you can and call 911. You or someone else can pick up your car later. Not only is it not safe for you to drive, but the issue could be a precursor to something bigger and you definitely don’t want to be driving if you don’t pay attention to that first warning.

If you have a passenger who drives and you are near a hospital, your passenger can drive you to the hospital, but you should not drive under any circumstances.

A Medical Emergency That Renders You Unconscious

There isn’t anything you can do to avoid an accident if you pass out while you’re driving. However, you can try to avoid the incident. If you are not feeling well, don’t drive yourself to the hospital. Call 911. Even if you think it’s something that is not serious, avoid driving as it could be more serious than you think.

If you are a passenger and the driver passes out, put the vehicle in neutral and, if you can, turn on the emergency flashers to warn other drivers. Grab the steering wheel and try to maneuver the vehicle off the road. If you can reach the brake pedal, so much the better. With the vehicle in neutral, it will start to slow down, hopefully enough so that you can avoid other vehicles and obstacles in your way. You can also use the emergency brake to help you slow down by engaging and releasing the brake. Do not leave the emergency brake engaged as it could cause you to spin out.

Tips For Staying Alert On The Road

There is no doubt that road trips are enjoyable, at least the first few hours before fatigue begins to set in. Maintaining your awareness is crucial, especially on long road trips. Studies have shown that a drowsy driver is just as dangerous as a drunk driver. Falling asleep while driving contributes to 10% of all road accidents, which result in as many as 300 deaths and multiple injuries each year. Don’t endanger yourself and others.

SouthTowne Motors has a few tips to avoid this.

If you’re tired, don’t fight it.

This is almost always the best option if you’re feeling yourself nodding off. There is no shame in pulling over to rest. This can be the most important thing you can do when driving for extended periods of time. Research has proven that even if you take a cat nap for less than an hour, your body receives vital rest it needs to help you stay alert and awake long into the night. So pull that Chevy over and take a 30 minute power nap.

Crank up the music.

Music will affect your mood and energy level. Put together a lively playlist for the road. Add your favorite hits that you love to sing along with. Studies have shown that music with fast and upbeat rhythms and high frequencies work best. Choose a lot of energetic and lively music to boost your feeling of alertness. This is your chance to really rock out on your road trip!

Cold air.

This can be very effective in cooler weather or you can also turn on your car’s AC. Cold air shocks your senses giving you a temporary jolt which makes your body more alert. As most people know, warm air only enhances drowsiness.

Get the blood flowing and the heart rate up by pulling over and doing some quick exercises. Anything works. You can do a little jog around the car or even a few jumping jacks. Anything that accelerates your heart rate will invigorate you and keep you awake.

Keep your taste buds alert.

Eating tangy or tart fruits can wake up the taste buds and the mind. You can even suck on sour candies for this affect. Carrots can also be affective due to the extra effort and time it takes to chew them.

A jolt of caffeine can help.

A cup of coffee or a coke can help boost your alertness. Grabbing one can also give you an excuse to get out of the car and move around.

The next time you feel yourself feeling a bit drowsy, remember these effective ways to rejuvenate yourself. From your Newnan car dealer, drive safe!

Driving Safety Tips

Many people get in their vehicles, turn the key and go, and don’t think about driving safety other than not texting while driving and wearing their seatbelts. However, there is more that you can do to be sure you are safe while you are on the road, including getting your car checked frequently and keeping up with maintenance at SouthTowne Motors.

  • Follow your vehicle’s maintenance schedule religiously. When you take your vehicle in for service, the service technician checks belts, hoses, brakes, suspension, steering, fluids and tires when you bring your vehicle in. This could save you from getting stranded, plus it could save you from getting into an accident when something breaks.
  • Keep safety equipment in your vehicle. Always carry a camera if you don’t have one on your cell phone. If you don’t have a cell phone and have never considered getting one, buy an inexpensive phone with pay per minute. This way, if you do get stranded, you have a way to call someone without walking to a phone.

You should also keep a blanket in your car, especially if you live in an area where it gets cold. If you have to wait a couple hours for a tow truck in 30-degree weather, this could save you.

Flares and a flashlight with good batteries are also important things to keep in your vehicle.

Check your spare tire at least once per month to make sure it is holding air. Make sure the jack and other equipment needed to change the tire is in the vehicle. You can easily change your own tire on the road, rather than waiting for a tow truck or having the vehicle towed.

While you are out driving, there are several things to look out for, especially other drivers making mistakes. While you may be careful and not expect to get into an accident, someone could switch lanes without seeing you or cut you off if he or she runs a red light. You should also keep an eye out for motorcycles and pedestrians. Both are difficult to see while you are driving, especially at dusk and after dark.

Spring Break Road Trip Preparation

With spring right around the corner, it’s time to get ready to hit the road for an adventure. To avoid any mishaps on the road, be sure to have a maintenance check done at a dealer in Atlanta. Brakes, oil and tires should all be part of the service list. And if you’re ready for a new vehicle for the road trip, you’ll find plenty of both new and used cars at an Atlanta dealer like Southtowne.

If you headed for a long road trip with kids, you’ll want to be sure to bring along entertainment. Flash cards, books, travel games, iPods and even a good movie if you’ve got a screen in your care are all great ways to keep the kiddos busy and happy. Stopping at fast-food restaurants can add up quickly and is also unhealthy. Chop up some fresh veggies and fruit and place them in plastic bags for easy snacking. Bring some cold cuts and whole-wheat bread to make your own sandwiches. For hydrating, a few bottles of water will do the job. Use a cooler to store beverages.

To keep the interior of the car clean while on the road, pack a roll of paper towels, a tub of cleaning wipes and some trash bags. For a good old family picnic when you stop to eat, bring along a large beach towel and spread it out where you stop. Other essentials for prepping for a road adventure include bringing a long a first aid kit and road-side emergency kit. With new and used cars, it’s always wise to have a pair of jumper cables. This way you’ll be prepared. When you’re taking a road trip, it’s always important to be prepared for the unexpected.

Southtowne is a GMC car dealer, Chevy car dealer and a Cadillac dealer. This dealerships showcases both new and used cars. Stop by to get a car for your spring road trip.

Tire Tips

Rear tread - penny test

Tire safety is often overlooked. It’s important to be tire smart by educating yourself now. Did you know that over 250,000 accidents take place yearly simply due to an under-inflated tire? Don’t be a statistic. Heed these tire tips from your Newnan car dealer.

Correct tire pressure could save you and your family’s lives. By locating the PSI sticker on your car, usually on the inside of the driver’s door, you can inflate to the exact PSI recommended for each tire. It can also be found in your owner’s manual. Check your tires once a month and always before leaving for a long trip. Wait up to three hours to make sure your tires are cool in order to get the correct PSI. Over 50% of cars and small trucks have at least one under inflated tire.

If your tires are under inflated, this will create excess heat and could lead to a blowout. Not to mention, if you have under inflated tires, it can actually lead to higher fuel costs to you by as much as five cents per gallon. On the fipside, if you over inflate them, this only weakens your tires and makes them susceptible to road damage and handling issues. Never over load your vehicle. Your tires do have weight limits. Overcapacity is the second cause of tire failure.

Perform a tread test by taking a penny and placing it upside down into your tire tread groove. If you see Lincoln’s head is completely covered by the tread, then you have the correct amount of tread. If you can see all of his head, now is the time to purchase a new tire. Making sure you have enough tread is important to your vehicle’s traction. This is particularly important during bad weather. Tires with the correct amount of tread will hold up resistance to hydroplaning.

Make sure your car is properly aligned. If you feel that your steering is starting to pull slightly to one side while driving straight, this is a sign you need to go and get your car realigned. If you’re not aligned correctly this cause’s uneven tire wear. Especially check your alignment if you have been in a collision or if you’re continuously driving on rough and jarring roads.

Keep these tips in mind the next time you check your tires. Happy driving from your friends at SouthTowne Motors.
