Charles Pinckney National Historic Site

Most Americans are familiar with a few key names of those who were signers and/or authors of our nation’s Constitution. Names such as Alexander Hamilton, Benjamin Franklin, and George Washington are the ones that first come to mind. There is one, however, that has been largely forgotten about and who played a large role in drafting it. This man, named Charles Cotesworth Pinckney, was from the South Carolina Lowcountry and helped shaped the United States when it was first formed. Our fledgling nation, after having gained independence in 1776, was still in the learning and growing stages.

Charles Pinckney was born to a family of plantation owners in South Carolina. His father had served as chief justice for the same state and influenced his son in many ways. Snee Farm was where Charles Pinckney lived until 1817 when he had to sell it off to settle a few outstanding debts. Today, you can visit the same area that shaped and inspired this strong man. This place is called the Charles Pinckney National Historic Site and is located within Mount Pleasant, SC. The park is open daily from 9am until 5 pm and has no entrance fee.

There are a plethora of activities you can partake in while visiting this area. Twenty-eight acres of what used to be the 715-acre Snee Farm are still intact and can be toured. There are exhibits located along the trails that describe the house, history, and excavations that have occurred here. The visitor center on site is dated to about 1828 which is just a few years after the passing of Charles Pinckney. The museum inside holds a 20-minute film introducing you to the plantation as well as exhibits.

There are many fantastic places to visit while you are in the Charleston area. Fort Sumter and Fort Moultrie are also close by and worth the visit. There is never a shortage of things to see and do in this historic town. So load up your vehicle from SouthTowne Motors and hit the road. Be sure to take your camera with you to take several family photographs to capture these precious and breathtaking moments. Have a great time exploring new places from your Newnan car dealer.
