History of Cadillac

Cadillac is a strong, innovative brand that brings the word luxury to the next level. This company was formed by the last remaining remnants of the Henry Ford Company when it was dissolved. When an engineer by the name of Henry Leland was called to appraise the leftover equipment and plant before sale, he instead persuaded them to form a new automobile company. At the time, Leland had developed his own engine with a single-cylinder so, using this design, they reformed the company in 1902 as the Cadillac Automobile Company. Naturally, Leland’s manufacturing plant merged with Cadillac by 1905.

The company’s iconic name was decided on after the French 17th century explorer, Antoine Laumet de La Mothe, sieur de Cadillac. This explorer had founded the city of Detroit in 1701 so it seemed fitting enough to name a company after this great explorer over 200 years later. The early budding automobile company produced their first two cars in October of 1902; the Runabout and Tonneau. These early vehicles were two-seater horseless carriages that were powered by Leland’s single-cylinder engine.

After these new cars were shown at the New York Auto Show the following year, the crowd was so impressed that over 2,000 orders were made for them. At the time, they were more reliable than their competitors and the public was eager to have them. In 1908, Cadillac was awarded the Dewar Trophy for having the most significant development in automotive history. The brand has always aimed for style, precision and luxury which has led it to become one of the most supreme cars in the United States.

General Motors bought Cadillac in 1909 and it became their status brand of luxury vehicles. GM also used Cadillac as the commercial chassis for hearses, ambulances, limousines and others. By 1917, they had developed a V8 engine which allowed the vehicle to achieve a speed of 65 miles per hour. The roads at the time were not even developed properly for this quickness.

The brand has survived through both World Wars and strives to keep their promise to stun the world with their innovative and high-quality vehicles. There are many fine dealerships you can find this high-class brand. Your local Newnan car dealer, SouthTowne Motors, is proud to sell them.
