How to Know When It Is Time To Get New Tires

First of all, the main function of tread on a tire is to make sure that water that is under the tire is moved away for improved traction. Tires are no longer safe when they’re worn out, and this is usually when they reach 1/16th of an inch of tread.

Part of knowing when to change your tires is knowing what to look for. Many tires in the United States have tread wear bars, and these bars become flush with the tread when the tires need replacing. When you see this, you’ll know the tire is no longer safe to drive on.

You can also do something called a penny test. With this test, you place a penny in the spaces between the tread with President Lincoln facing you. Put this in the space near the thickest part of the tire. If you can see Lincoln’s head or any copper above it, replace your tires. If his hair is partially visible, you’ll need to consider getting tires soon. If the tread comes up past his forehead, your tires are still good, and you can continue to drive on them.

Alternatively, you can use a tread depth gauge to determine the same thing. You can download them online or buy a tool to check the tread depth.

You may also want to take your car in for repairs or adjustments if you see that the tread on your tires is wearing inconsistently. If your wheels are misaligned or the tires need rotated, you might see that one section is wearing out fast than the others and needs to be replaced.  If you are unsure about your tires do not hesitate to bring your car in to our Atlanta Car Dealership and have one of our service experts look at it.

Spring is rolling in fast and soon you will experience “on the road” fever where the highways and the byways beckon for both on-road and off-road exploration of the countryside and especially the North Georgia mountains. Best Car Costume Ever

First off, it’s a Chevrolet. Second it’s a Camaro. Third…IT’S A TRANSFORMER!

I ran across this video purely by accident and thought that since Halloween is just days away, maybe this will give a few of you out there who haven’t settled on a costume yet an idea. Or, even better, if you think your costume is great, just check out this one. It’s just great.

Also, I just wanted to remind you one more time that you’ll need to be on your best driving behavior these next couple of days as there is no doubt that we will see an increase in pedestrian traffic, mostly children, so keep your speeds slow and just assume they are going to jump out in front of your car at some point…that way you are always on guard.

Finally, you adults that love Halloween, be smart, don’t drink and drive, the police will be out in full force, and although your might have won the prize at the costume party, you aren’t going to fool any officer if you’ve had too much to drink.

Be safe and have a Happy Halloween from your Atlanta GM dealer, The Southtowne General Motors Superstore.

Who’s Ready For The 2014 Chevrolet Corvette

Earlier this month I wrote a post about the Corvette 427, and just when I get excited about this new Vette, I learned that they are releasing a new design on 1/13/13. According to Chevrolet’s Web Site: “The NEXT generation Corvette is coming, with transformational advancements in design, engineering, and technology, the driving experience will never be the same.” It’s all under a header of “We changed it so that it would change you.”

So what does this new Corvette look like? Not sure yet, but I found a teaser that might interest you.

OK, so the teaser still leaves a lot for the imagination, but isn’t that the point of a teaser anyway? If you are interested to start getting sneak peak at the new 2014 Corvette before they hit the airwaves and car lots, check Chevrolet’s site. They have unreleased video that will enable you to catch even more sneak peaks of the 2014 Corvette as is comes closer to the release date.

Could it look like this?

We’re not really sure just yet, I guess you’ll have to swing by your Atlanta Corvette dealer, The Southtowne General Motors Superstore on 1/13/13 to find out.

Atlanta Chevrolet, The Baddest Production Camaro…EVER

Your Atlanta Chevy dealer knows that everyone likes a fast car. We’ll this year Chevrolet will be producing 69 COPO Camaros which is Chevrolet’s second factory production car build specifically for racing, the first COPO Camaro being build in 1969. This car is strictly for the track. There is no VIN number associated with this production, just a serial number.

What does COPO stand for? According to notes from the video below:

COPO stands for Central Office Production Order, a process that was used in the ’60s for fleet managers to order unusual combinations of options. Dealer Fred Gibb figured out how to use the system to get GM to assemble cars that were never intended for production. He ordered 1969 Camaros that used a derivative of GM’s 427ci, all-aluminum ZL1 race engine, and bought enough of them to make them legal to compete as production cars in NHRA and AHRA drag racing. There were 69 ZL1 Camaros built in 1969, and Chevrolet is building the same number for 2012.

Check out the 2012 COPO Camaro:

Of course, this Camaro isn’t for everyone, but Chevrolet has a production version that might be more up your alley. If you are feeling the need for speed, check out our selection at your Atlanta Chevrolet dealer, the Southtowne General Motors Superstore

Atlanta Chevrolet, How Does the Chevy Volt Work

I’ve been really reading up on the Chevrolet Volt recently, so much so I wanted to write a second post for all of those people who want to know how the technology actually works. In my last post, I touched on how the Chevy Volt can actually change the way people drive. This post is about how the Chevy Volt works. There’s a lot of engineering behind the Chevrolet Volt, even for the most advanced automotive technicians and enthusiasts. The technology is so fantastic I wanted to see if I could find an article, or video with extremely detailed information about how the Chevy Volt works. Well, I found what I was looking for. Here’s a very detailed presentation of how the Chevrolet Volt’s engine, two motors, three clutches and battery pack work together to drive the car

Again, if you are as inspired as I am about the Chevrolet Volt, I want to invite you to come over to you Atlanta Chevrolet dealer, The Southtowne General Motors Super Store and take a really god look at one. This is the beginning of the future of automobiles.

Atlanta Chevrolet Lovers, Does The Chevy Volt Make You A Better Driver?

Your Atlanta Chevy Dealer, The Southtowne GM Superstore is letting you know right now, at some point in our driving existence, we are going to have to embrace new fuel technologies. I’m talking about the 2013 Chevrolet Volt. At the moment, the search is on for a reliable vehicle that is light on fossil fuel consumption and heavy on the mileage. The 2013 Chevrolet Volt actually gives you the best of both worlds – extended battery life in the range of 38 miles per charge and a total range of over 380 miles (when you kick in the gas support).

Imagine only hitting the gas station once a month. A fantasy? Far from it. In fact, Volt drivers who charge regularly are averaging 900 miles, or about a month between fill-ups.

That is some serious mileage!

Something that is pointed out in the video is how a vehicle can actually modify or change your driving habits. You’ll find yourself slowing down and conserving energy in a new Volt. That just translates into safer roads, doesn’t it? Do you think that a car can actually make you a better driver? Do new shoes make you a better basketball player? Does buying a new guitar make you a better musician? They can, but not really drastically. However, the Chevy Volt seems to have that power.

If you want to come and take a test drive of the new 2013 Chevrolet Volt, just swing by your Atlanta Chevrolet dealer, the Southtowne Automotive Group.
