Buick Turns 110

As an Atlanta Buick dealer, those of us at Southtowne are pleased to be celebrating the 110th birthday of the Buick automobile. I thought it might be timely to take a quick look at the history and milestones of this iconic automobile line. There may even be some bits of trivia you’ll learn here to amaze your friends!

David Dunbar Buick began the Buick Motor Company on May 19, 1903. It is the American made automobile with the current longest history. It is actually one of the oldest brands of automobiles in the world. David Buick didn’t hang around long. He sold his stock in the company shortly after and although his name lives on, he passed away some 25 years later, living a rather modest life.

Through the end of last year Buick has sold more than 43 million vehicles. Throughout the years Buick has sold vehicles with seating for 2,4, 5 and 6 passengers. Twice they have sold models with seating for 8. The first was the 1991-1996 Roadmaster Estate, and the other time is the 2008-2013 Enclave.

The Buick Electra 225 that debuted in 1959 was called the 225 because that was the length of the vehicle in inches. Some referred to it as the “deuce and a quarter”. The length of the Electra continued to grow until in 1975, when it reached a whopping 233.7 inches. That’s almost 20 feet bumper to bumper! Compare that to Buick’s first vehicle, the 1904 Buick Model B (pictured at the top), which had only an 83 inch wheelbase.

Buick may not be known for its speed but the line has had its moments. The 1987 Buick GNX could go from 0-60 in just 4.6 seconds. The model is also one of Buick’s rarest, with just 547 of the speedy models produced. The fastest production car Buick ever built is one you can get today. Last year a Buick Regal GS luxury sports sedan clocked in at 162 miles per hour at the Nevada Open Road Challenge.

The first Buick production car to top 100 miles per hour was built in 1936. It was appropriately called the Buick Century.  Today’s Buicks are built in state of the art facilities throughout the world. A long way from that first hand built car that was put together 110 years ago in a small barn in David Buick’s backyard.
