Fuel Injection History

Most engines these days are what the industry calls fuel-injected. If you are not car savvy, you overlook this detail with a shrug and move on down the list of more exciting and tangible features for the vehicle in question. But what does fuel-injected mean? Maybe we should stop and do a little reading on what this engine does and where it came from. Are there better options? Has there ever been another option?

The fuel-injected engine became the primary fuel delivery system during the 1980s and they replaced having the need for a carburetor. The main difference in these two engine types is that the fuel injection system forcefully pumps gas through a small nozzle which is under high pressure. The carburetor relies on suction to draw fuel into the airstream.

Even though many modernized vehicle engines didn’t see this technology until the 1980s, the Germans had dabbled into it during World War II in their fighter aircraft. But, even earlier than that, around the turn of the 20th century, a man by the name of Herbert Akroyd Stuart created the first system that closely resembles what we have today.

By the 1920s, this system was used mainly for diesel engines. During the 1950s, Chevrolet began working on their fuel injection system as well. Their take on the invention was to meter the flow of fuel by a collection of injection lines instead of just a “pulse” used by other developers. This allowed their engines to adjust the flow of fuel according to the load and speed of the vehicle.

Not much changed from the 1950s until the 1980s when the first fully digital electronic fuel injection system was invented. Electronic fuel injection mixes an appropriate amount of fuel and air in an internal combustion engine. This has become the standard of many vehicles and is still used today. It has almost completely replaced the need for a carburetor.

One major advantage of having a fuel-injected engine is that you get better fuel economy and more power. The car also produces less carbon-based emissions and drives smoother than one with a carburetor.

If you have questions about these engines, our friendly staff will gladly help you. At SouthTowne Motors, we are your Newnan car dealer and expert!

Buick Faceplate Buttons

Buick Verano at SouthTowne Motors

Technology these days can be a bit confusing, especially the newest technology that hasn’t been around for too long. Fortunately, there are dozens of internet sites and manuals to help us learn the things that don’t appear to be such common sense anymore. With the rise of the infotainment system, consumers can now control anything and everything right from an eight-inch color touchscreen from the center of their dash.

Luckily, since some of us aren’t familiar with the touchscreen functions, there are a few actual buttons we can learn about to control radio stations, phone calls, and more. The newest models of Buicks here at SouthTowne Motors have these buttons. They are called the faceplate buttons and they are located on the sides of the vehicle’s touch screen system.

They don’t look like your typical buttons. They are backlit and are flush against the system. Just a light touch is all you need for these special buttons. Don’t confuse them with the chrome bar that is above or below them. When you touch the area, you will hear a low beep to indicate you pressed it correctly.

There are also buttons that are connected to the system located on the steering wheel. These are actual buttons you press a bit harder and that do various things in the vehicle without making you take your hands off of the steering wheel. The push to talk button has three functions. Push it once to activate the voice recognition and voice prompts. If you push it twice, it will go right to activating the voice recognition without prompts. A third, long push will mute or unmute the radio speakers in the vehicle.

The up and down arrows will toggle between radio stations and tracks on a CD or DVD. Pushing the down arrow will also end a call or reject an incoming call. The seek button will play the next track on a CD or USB device. The volume buttons are just behind the steering wheel and are pulled toward you to turn it up or down.

Hopefully, this guide has helped you learn a bit more about your new Buick from your Newnan car dealer. We also have a wide selection of Chevrolet and Cadillac vehicles. So if you’re in the market for a new Chevy, head south of Atlanta and come see us at SouthTowne Motors!

Car Safety Glass is Stronger Than You Might Think

You have windows all throughout your home or apartment, and if you’ve ever broken one (guilty here on a few occasions), you know that when they shatter, glass goes everywhere. Hopefully you’ve never been involved in an auto accident, but if you have, you probably noticed that car windows don’t shatter so easily. Why?

Safety glass!

So, what makes safety glass different? Safety glass is made up of several layers of glass – usually two or more – and a thin layer of clear, plastic film which is sandwiched between them. This film helps keep glass from flying everywhere when broken, which could cause injury to you, or any other occupants in your car.

Safety glass was first used in cars in the late 1920s, and before that, the car windows were made similar to those windows found in your home. Ouch! According to glasslinks.com, the safety glass in cars today can withstand three times the impact velocity of standard windshields.

Most side and rear windows in cars are made from a tempered safety glass. This tempering process can strengthen glass up to 10 times that of un-tempered glass. It involves heating the glass and contouring it as it heats. While very strong, tempered glass can break, but when it does, it shatters into rounded, smaller pieces that are less likely to injure someone.

Does Your New Car Have A Case Of Cat Scratch Fever?

Your GM dealer, the Southtowne General Motors Superstore, knows that finding scratches in your paint job can really take the wind out of your sails. You pamper your four-wheeled friend, only to find that they left scratch marks all over your hood. Cats are great – dogs, too – but sometimes they get loose and end up treating your car as their own personal jungle gym!

You might not even have a pet, but there might be a few loose in your neighborhood that you have no control over. No worries, though; if you get scratches in your paint, it’s not the end of the world.  In most cases, with a few items, you can get those scratches right out. Word of caution: if these steps seem like too much, please contact the Southtowne GM Superstore, or a car painting specialist before you dive in!

First, you’ll need to wash the scratched area with soapy water and make sure you dry it completely.

If you have a dark-colored car, rub some white shoe polish along the scratched area. For a light-colored car, use a dark polish. Once this is done, wipe off the polish. You should notice that the polish is off of the paint, but it should remain within the scratches. That’s OK!

Now use some fine sandpaper, wrap it around a sanding block and dip it in cold, soapy water. Sand out the scratched area, moving up and down the length of the scratches, until they no longer stand out. Make sure you keep the sandpaper slippery throughout by rinsing it in cold water.

Once all signs of the scratches have been sanded out, next comes the polishing wheel. Take it and buff the area with a rubbing compound by rubbing in a circular motion. Remove that compound with a terrycloth towel and use a foam polishing compound to buff with a swirl mark eliminator or fine compound. You can usually get this compound already applied to a pad for the polishing wheel.

Now just wax the area to seal the surface and you should be good to go! If you have any questions or want to add any info to this post, feel free to comment, or just come and see the Southtowne GM Superstore.

Atlanta Car Dealer: The Importance Of Changing Your Hoses

What’s the single most important component in your Atlanta car’s engine? If you said the Radiator and Hoses, then you win!

Your Atlanta Car dealer, The Southtowne General Motors Superstore really wants to impress on you that properly maintained radiator hoses are extremely important to a vehicle cooling system and keeping you from experiencing a roadside breakdown. Since the development of large internal combustion engines, they have had cooling hoses to recirculate the flow of coolant to keep the engine from overheating. Today we still find hoses on vehicles. The fact is that hoses are probably the only thing that haven’t changed much in engine development over the years even though the engine itself has gone through revolutionary changes. Cooling hoses are responsible for the exchange of coolant from the engine to the radiator (cooling the heated fluid) and then returning it back to the engine, repeating itself over and over in a cycle. Due to the extreme heat, environment and pollution hoses can become hardened, start to crack and even break over time. Hoses are a lot like belts as they age their reliability lessens. Southtowne recommends replacing your hoses every 2 year or 24k miles on your Atlanta Buick, GMC, Cadillac or Chevrolet.

Every vehicle owner should know the importance of the radiator hose. When this auto part fails to function properly, the engine is likely to overheat. No matter how sturdy a radiator hose is, it will be subjected to deterioration sooner or later. In view of that, it is best to change your automobile’s radiator hose once every four years. It is also essential to bring them to the experts here at the Southtowne General Motors Superstore for regular assessment.
