Everglades National Park Road Trip

One of the best road trips you can take is to the Everglades National Park. The park is located in the tip of southern Florida; and it has a deep history. At one point, citizens started draining the Everglades so that the land would be more useful. It was soon realized that the drainage project was destroying the fragile ecosystem and drainage and construction were halted.

Create a Tradition

The Everglades Ecosystem is home to over 350 different species of documented birds. When you take a road trip in your new SouthTowne Motors car, watch for some of the rare species. Make a tradition of visiting every year so that you can see your favorite birds.

Old Highways

Two of the old highways are still in place – at least parts of them. The Old Ingraham Highway that led to Royal Palm State Park was completed by the time the park was dedicated in 1916. While it was supposed to be part of a railroad project, it was determined that a better route existed. However, James E. Ingraham wanted to continue the highway for the growth in agriculture and development for the Everglades.

By 1922 a large portion of the original proposed route was completed, but not to Cape Sable as planned. The Homestead Canal was tied to the highway and was used as drainage for the road. The canal, about 50 miles long, runs along the road until Coot Bay/Mud Lake. The old road is now part of new roads that run from Florida City to Flamingo. Some of the highway is now park administrative roads or trails; and some of it has been removed so that the landscape could be restored.

The Tamiami Trail runs from Fort Myers to Dade County. Construction began in 1915 and each district along the way built their part of the trail. This trail/road and its accompanying canal took 13 years to complete. The Tamiami Trail helped with the development of the interior of the Everglades and the accessibility of the area. Since the trail’s development disrupted the natural flow of water, many Miccosukee and Seminole villages were created along the tail – this native people served as tourist guides and hunting guides as the Everglades was their home.

National Soup Month Recipe – Hand-held Soups for the Car

Valerie Lam/Flickr Creative Commons

Instead of spending lots of money on hand-held soups to go, you can make your own. In addition to the soup ingredients, you’ll need a thermos for each person in the vehicle. Then, you can either stop at a rest area so the driver can also enjoy soup with the family or you can eat the soup on the go – and it will stay nice and warm.

Pack up your SouthTowne Buick, Cadillac, GMC or Chevrolet, plus your favorite soup, and head out on that road trip you’ve been planning.

Hearty Beef Stew

  • 2 pounds beef tips or sirloin cut into bite-size pieces
  • 2 slices slab bacon, cut into quarters
  • 4 cups water
  • 6 tablespoons flour
  • 2 cubes beef bullion
  • 4 medium potatoes, large diced
  • 4 medium carrots, large diced
  • 2 medium onions, large diced
  • 2 tablespoons pepper
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire Sauce
  • 1 teaspoon Liquid Smoke (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon thyme
  • 1 tablespoon Redfish seasoning (optional)
  • 1 bay leaf

Set the crock pot to medium or 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Saute the bacon in the bottom of the crock pot until it is translucent. Add the beef and lightly brown on all sides. Mix the flour and water until there are no lumps. Pour it over the beef. Add the bullion and spices. Reduce heat to 250 degrees Fahrenheit or medium low. Cook for 4 hours. Add vegetables and cook for 2-3 more hours or until beef pulls apart with a fork.

This recipe serves four, but can be frozen if you want to double it or if you have only two people. Once hot, ladle it into thermoses. If you freeze it, thaw it when you’re ready to use it, heat it in the microwave, and then ladle it into thermoses.

Vegetable Version

Use the same recipe except omit the beef and the beef bullion. Add chicken bullion for some “body.” You can also add chicken if you don’t want to go completely vegetarian.

2015 Sierra Beats Heavy Duty Challenge

2015 GMC Sierra 3500HD Newnan, GA 1GT422CGXFF110642

There’s no greater feeling in the world than knowing you drive the best truck out there. You climb into the cab and know you can tackle anything the day throws at you. You feel safe and secure and are eager to begin towing or hauling or whatever project you have. This is the same thrill you receive in the driver’s seat of the 2015 GMC Sierra 3500 HD. This truck was awarded the overall winning title in the 1-ton diesel category of the 2014 Heavy Duty Challenge. Here’s why.

The 2015 Sierra 3500 was put up against its two main competitors, the Ford F350 and the Ram 3500. It’s engine, the 6.6L Duramax Diesel, excelled against the engines of the other two, the Powerstroke diesel and Cummins diesel, respectively. The judges at the event even commented on the inside of the Sierra saying how much they enjoyed the newly designed interior and infotainment display. This truck scored high in vehicle control while towing. Cruise control, diesel exhaust brakes and grade braking help to relieve stress for drivers who do a lot of long-distance hauling and towing.

One of the tests performed was to descend 7.2 miles down the Eisenhower Pass in Colorado, which has up to a 7 percent grade. During this test, they counted how many brake pedal depressions were used. While the Ford tested with one brake depression and the Ram with five, the Sierra blew them out of the water with no brake pedal depressions at all. This is incredible. It also won in several other categories as well including the 0-60 mph on the Milan dragway, fuel economy with a trailer, and the 60-0 mpg braking at Proving Ground. All of these tests have proved that the Sierra is the best truck in class on the market today. Every Sierra HD comes with a five-year/100,000 mile powertrain warranty, Pro Grade Protection, and a two-year or 24,000 mile standard scheduled maintenance.

This winning truck can be found today at your Newnan GMC dealership. Stop by to take a test drive or to see other trucks, cars and SUVs that may suit your needs. We look forward to seeing you soon.

How to Keep Your Car Cool

Most drivers don’t enjoy driving in intense temperatures. Getting into a hot sweltering car can feel like you are being roasted. Let’s stay cool this summer by being ready for whatever the summer heat throws at you. The crew over at SouthTowne Motors have a few tips and tricks up their sleeve to share with you.

Make shade your best friend as well as purchasing a window visor. By parking in shady areas, you will greatly reduce the amount of heat that builds up in your car. When it is 90 degrees outside, your car’s internal temperature can reach 109 within just minutes. It only gets hotter in just under ten minutes so imagine the inside of your car reaching 138 degrees. You can help avoid this issue by blocking direct sunlight and using your window visor. If you left your window visor at home or just can’t find a shaded spot, a great tip is to try parking your car’s front away from oncoming sun. This means your front seats along with steering wheel will stay protected from the sun.

These next two go hand in hand. Purchase a small solar powered fan along with slightly cracking your windows. This doesn’t mean leave your windows all the way down, just slightly cracked. Check to make sure your own arm can’t fit through the crack. Making a small crack is enough to promote better ventilation to cool your car off. Cracked windows along with a mini solar fan will keep your car cool even in the hottest of summer days.

Open your doors before you get in and vent the hot air out. Don’t just go jumping into a scorching hot car. Especially if your car has been sitting in extreme temperatures for a long period of time. Let the vehicle air out a moment to allow cool air to enter and hot air to exit. It’s also a good idea to invest in tinted windows to keep out the sun. Window tints will help reflect the sun’s UV rays and keep your car cooler. Just be mindful of state laws and regulations. Check your local DMV before tinting your cars windows. Stay cool this summer with these handy pieces of advice from your local Newnan car dealer.

Mother’s Day Road Trip

Mother’s Day is coming up right around the corner. If you aren’t quite sure what you are doing for dear old mom yet, here are a few ideas to get the ball rolling. You don’t have to go too far to enjoy a wonderful, relaxing and exciting day. Just load up the Chevy, buckle up, and prepare for an outing she won’t forget.

If she likes wine, Georgia has one of the best wineries in the South. Chateau Elan is a short two-hour drive from your Newnan car dealership and is full of fun things for Mom to enjoy. This stunning landscape is over 3,500 acres and includes a full-production winery, championship golf course, a European health spa and lots more. There is so much to do here that you may even want to stay the night. Right now, the resort is offering a special strictly for Mother’s Day Sunday. You can stay overnight on May 11 for just $99. The winery tour is guided and is only $10 per person. At the end of the tour, you may sample up to five wines and you receive a souvenir wine glass. What better way to show Mom you appreciate her than with a weekend getaway to Chateau Elan?

Another great idea is to buy Mom a CityPass for Atlanta. This money-saving ticket book is full of options to visit five of the seven listed attractions. You can begin your journey through the sites early Saturday morning and see everything you want by Sunday evening. Or she can save some and go on her own time as long as it is within the nine day time period of the first ticket use. She can get two whole weekends of fun and entertainment with this ticket book. If she has never been to the major attractions in Atlanta, it’s time for her to go. They include the Georgia Aquarium, the World of Coca-Cola, the CNN Tour, Zoo Atlanta, the High Museum of Art, Fernbank and the Atlanta History Center.

So if you haven’t decided what to do for Mom yet, we hope these ideas have sparked something grand. From Southtowne Motors, we hope you all have a safe, fun and happy Mother’s Day.
