Atlanta, How Do You Find A Good Car Mechanic

Every mechanic, either an independent or a dealership, will claim to be the best mechanics in the business. So how can you counter some of these claims? First, ask your friends. There’s  chance they may have used the mechanic you were considering before and would be a very good source of information.

If you think you’ve found a mechanic, now do your research. Do they have any bad reviews? If so, do they sound legit? Do they have an active Facebook page? Check and ask questions, they should answer. Are they accredited or ASC certified? Check out the video below for some excellent advice and what to look for when choosing the right mechanic or you.

Research is really important here. If you choose the wrong mechanic, you may find yourself spending a lot more money than you had planned on. Also be wary of the mechanics who are telling you about any amount of additional work that needs to be done. Not everything is as urgent as some people like to make them out to be. Don’t ignore their advice, just be wary…maybe get a second opinion from a mechanic who’s name you know and trust.

Atlanta GM Dealer: Change Your Own Air Filter

Your Atlanta GM Dealer, The Southtowne General Motors Superstore wants to remind you to check your air filter to both increase performance and gas mileage. It stands to reason that if your engine runs on a combination mixture of fuel, oxygen and fire having a mismatch in that all important propulsion soup is going to cause some serious degradation in the overall feel of your vehicle. An ignored air filter will cost you money in the long run, I can assure you of that.

Even the government has discussed the importance of maintaining a clean air filter at

A new studyAdobe Acrobat Icon shows that replacing a clogged air filter on cars with fuel-injected, computer-controlled gasoline engines does not improve fuel economy but it can improve acceleration time by around 6 to 11 percent. This kind of engine is prevalent on most gasoline cars manufactured from the early 1980s onward.

Tests suggest that replacing a clogged air filter on an older car with a carbureted engine may improve fuel economy 2 to 6 percent under normal replacement conditions or up to 14 percent if the filter is so clogged that it significantly affects drivability.

Remember, the air intake filter shouldn’t be neglected on any car. Further, the conditions you drive in will determine when the repair of the filter will be needed. Work trucks driving in harsh/dirty conditions will obviously need to be replaced more than a filter from a vehicle stored in a garage and driven only around Atlanta.

Changing your air filter is easy and demonstrated in the video below.

See! It’s not that hard. However, if you’d rather not mess around with it, or  have any questions in general, feel free to contact your Atlanta GM Dealer, the Southtowne General Motors Superstore and we’d gladly take care of it for your. You’ll see an immediate improvement in the performance and gas mileage immediately following the service.

Atlanta GM Dealer: Learn To Change Your Own Oil

change your own oil, atlanta car dealer, atlanta gm, atlanta gmc, southowne gm superstore

Your Atlanta car dealer, the Southtowne General Motors Superstore wants to teach you something that you probably never thought you’d ever do yourself: Change your own oil. In fact, changing your own oil isn’t really as difficult as you may think. It should take you about 30 minutes if you have all of the right tools and supplies.

Tools Required:

  • Wrench to remove drain plug (box end or socket)
  • Oil filter wrench
  • Oil drain pan
  • Funnel
  • Latex gloves
  • Jack and jack stands or ramps (optional, depends on ground clearance)

Of course you’ll also need oil and a new oil filter. Make sure you purchase the right viscosity for your car. Putting in the wrong oil will damage your engine.

Here is a step by step video from Eric The Car Guy. He shows you exactly what to do, how do do it and how to be safe about it.

More than anything, the basic oil change is a great way to connect with your vehicle and take some control over its maintenance. The time you spend under the hood and under your Atlanta GM affords you an excellent opportunity to look around and see if anything else needs attention. If you find anything else that needs attention, or you just don’t have the confidence to change your own oil, you are always welcome to bring your car into your Atlanta GM Dealer, the Southtowne General Motors Superstore

Atlanta Car Dealer: Change Your Spark Plugs For Better Performance

Your Atlanta Car Dealer, the Southtowne General Motors Superstore wants you to think of your spark plugs as the heart of your engine. Their primary purpose is to ignite the fuel/air mixture in your engine which is who your engine generates power. This happens thousands of time a minute. Changing your spark plugs is something you can do at home, but plan for this fix to take a little while, especially if it is your first time. However, changing both your spark plugs and their respective cables will increase performance and gas mileage in your vehicle.

The average spark plug last 10 to 20 thousand miles. High end plugs can last almost 60 thousand miles. If you can’t remember when you had them changed last, it’s probably about time. As our car ages, oil can seep into the cylinder and interfere with the spark plug’s ability to fire and is detrimental to the life of the plug itself. Carbon can also build up on the plug and “foul” it.

In the old days you’d have to adjust the gap, but for modern vehicle you can pretty much just install your new spark plug right out of the box. No adjustment should be needed. Here’s a little tip. Spend a few extra dollars and get a high end set of plugs. Quality spark plugs produce a better spark which will directly affect your engine’s performance and fuel economy.

You should notice a significant improvement in the performance of your Atlanta Buick, GMC, Cadillac or Chevrolet. If you are uncertain about performing this simple maintenance, then feel free to contact the Southtowne General Motors Superstore in Atlanta and we an either walk you through your repair, or just do it for you. Regardless, don’t let your engine under-perform any longer. Change those plugs!!!

Atlanta Car Dealer: Sharing The Road With Cyclists

Your Atlanta Car dealer, the Southtowne General Motors Superstore wants to remind you to watch out for cyclists this summer while driving. Cycling has seen a boon in the recent years due to inflating gas prices and consequently there are more on the road these day. Did you know that Cyclists are legal operators of vehicles and have a right to occupy space on our road ways. Now cyclists have responsibilities while on the road too, but this post is more for you drivers out there. A car vs. cyclist collision can and often results in terrible injuries and many times death. The last thing you want is to hit a cyclist because you were neglectful of your responsibilities as a driver.

  • Avoid all distractions. That means stay off of your phone and pay attention.
  • Yield to bikes when turning.
  • Give them a little extra space when passing them in poor weather.
  • Keep a visual check for bikes by checking your mirrors when turning.
  • Give a cyclist some extra room when passing them. Three feet is a good distance.
  • Reduce your speed when passing bike.
  • Don’t honk at a cyclist, it can startle them and potentially cause a dangerous maneuvering error.
  • Check you blind spots when opening your door if you are parked on the shoulder of a road way.
  • Watch for kids; they are much harder to see and in some areas are more prolific than adult riders

Remember, cars aren’t the only vehicles you share the road with. With the increase in bicycle usage due to higher gas prices, chances of you encountering a cyclist on suburban and city roads is highly likely. How many times have you blown right by a person riding a bike and didn’t think twice about the “What If…” scenario. As in “what if” that cyclist swerved in front of me, or fell as a result of you passing too closely.

The bottom line is, the Southtowne General Motors Superstore wants to remind you to respect those your share the roadways with, even if their vehicle of choice doesn’t have an engine.

Atlanta GM Dealer: Rubbernecking…Just Don’t Do It

Your Atlanta Buick, GMC, Cadillac Dealer, the Southtowne General Motors Superior store wants to remind you of the dangers of rubbernecking. I don’t think that we all can truly appreciate the dangers of rubbernecking while driving if we haven’t been in an accident caused by a rubbernecker That is to say, someone who has taken their eyes off of the road and their mind off of the task of driving to gawk at something that is roadside.

The bottom line is that no matter how good of a driver you are, when you distract yourself from your driving task, you are not only putting your vehicle in danger, but also all of the others that you share the road with. Your rubbernecking and short stops might not cause an accident in your immediate vicinity, but could cause a chain reaction of events that is directly responsible for an accident farther behind you.

Resist the urge to slow down and look at roadside events. Accidents, flat tires, someone being pulled over, all of these things can divert your attention just long enough that you don’t see that the person in front of you has slowed down. You may not have the time to avoid hitting them and have just exasperated the problem with your carelessness.

Check out the video below. Accidents happen when you are paying attention other things other than the road in front of your. In this case, a new crew caught an accident as that person was apparently busy paying attention to the camera on the side of the road and not to the vehicle stopped in front of him.

Do us all a favor and resist the urge to rubberneck. You will not only keep yourself safe, but you won’t be causing an issue behind you with your curiosity. If you fail to head this warning, well, your Atlanta GM dealer, the Southtowne General Motors Superstore might be fixing your Buick, GMC, Cadillac or Chevrolet sooner than you think.
