Why Having a Road Map is Still Beneficial

Newnan road map

After you pick up your new vehicle from SouthTowne Motors of Newnan, Georgia, this spring, you’re ready to go on a road trip. However, if you choose to go someplace you’ve never been before, you might need a map or a GPS. Sometimes paper maps are better than the GPS, especially if you don’t want to go directly from point A to point B.

They’re More Affordable

Paper maps are more affordable than GPS units. Even if you buy a plug in GPS, you can expect to put out over $100. If you are on a limited budget, paper maps will get you where you’re going for much less than a GPS unit.

They’re Detailed

When you plug in a destination, the GPS will take you directly to that destination. Instead of showing you the side roads or attractions that are not on the main drag, it bypasses all of that. If you are on a road trip and want to take side trips, maps are more beneficial. And, when you do change your mind as to your destination, paper maps don’t yell at you, telling you to “turn around when possible,” and “recalculating.”

They Record Where You’ve Been

Marking up a paper map as you travel allows you to keep a record of your trip. That comes in handy when you want to revisit an attraction or out-of-the-way restaurant that you fell in love with. Or, if you loved a particular drive during a certain season, you’ll be able to mark that drive and write down the best time to take that drive again.

They Don’t Need Electricity

GPS units sometimes can’t find a satellite. But a paper map never loses its satellite. When you lose a satellite, you won’t be able to get it again unless you move from your spot. With a paper map, you’ll never be lost because of a lost satellite signal.

You Know You’re From Georgia If…

You know you're from Georgia

Obviously you know if you’re from Georgia. Whether you’re born and raised, just raised, or you moved here and are making up for lost time, a Georgian is a Georgian. But if you catch yourself doing some of the following, if you can nod knowingly, then you can know you’re truly from Georgia, regardless of how you came to be here.

  • If your own twin brother is 30 seconds older than you, you probably fight the compulsion to call him “sir.”
  • You listen to the weather forecast before getting dressed. Bonus points if you’ve brought an alternate set of clothes for later.
  • Stores don’t have bags or shopping carts, they have sacks and buggies.
  • You’ve been attacked by fire ants and lived to tell the tale.
  • Fried chicken is a major part of your diet and you know the best place in Georgia to get it (and no one else quite agrees with you where that place is).
  • You can properly pronounce Senoia, DeKalb, Dahlonega, Buena Vista, Chickamauga, Valdosta, Okefenokee, and La Fayette.
  • Coca Cola is a big deal in Georgia. It was invented in 1886 in Atlanta by John Pemberton. Any Georgia schoolchild can tell you that.
  • Speaking of Coke, every carbonated beverage is a Coke. Sprite? Coke. Dr. Pepper? Coke. Coca Cola? Definitely a Coke.
  • If you don’t want a Coke, of whatever variety, you can always order and iced tea. If a restaurant doesn’t have iced tea, they’re doing something wrong.
  • A Lexus or BMW aren’t status symbols – a Chevy Silverado Extended Bed Crew Cab is. You also know that SouthTowne Motors is the place to shop for a new truck.
