Why Used Tires Might Not Be The Best Idea

Used tires are really only a smart purchase when you just plain cannot afford a new set of wheels. There are simply too many risks that go along with used tires for them to work as a long term scenario, so when you drive off the lot of your Newnan car dealership, you may want to make sure that you have a new set of freshly rotated tires, because…

Used Tires May Have Other Issues

(Besides being used.) For instance, you never know when a used tire has a slow leak or a run in the rubber that may lead to a blow out after fewer than a thousand miles. You need to make sure that you’re safe, most of all, when you’re out on the road.

New Tires Cost Less in the Long Run

Used tires may seem like a great deal if you only have to purchase them once, but when you have to replace them more frequently, and at irregular intervals, then they wind up costing a lot and you never know when you’re going to have to buy a new set. Investing in new tires will cost you less in the long run.

Used Tires Aren’t Always Safe

If you have to choose between driving on a used tire or driving on your donut for a little longer, then drive on a used tire. However, the higher risk of blowouts and flats with a tire that someone else has already driven thousands of miles on just isn’t worth taking when you have the choice.

Anyone who’s ever had to commute to a job that just didn’t pay them enough knows that you don’t always have a choice, sometimes you need to drive on used tires. But, if you can afford a new set, then buy a new set. There’s no sense taking unnecessary risks when it comes to your car.

How to Know When It Is Time To Get New Tires

First of all, the main function of tread on a tire is to make sure that water that is under the tire is moved away for improved traction. Tires are no longer safe when they’re worn out, and this is usually when they reach 1/16th of an inch of tread.

Part of knowing when to change your tires is knowing what to look for. Many tires in the United States have tread wear bars, and these bars become flush with the tread when the tires need replacing. When you see this, you’ll know the tire is no longer safe to drive on.

You can also do something called a penny test. With this test, you place a penny in the spaces between the tread with President Lincoln facing you. Put this in the space near the thickest part of the tire. If you can see Lincoln’s head or any copper above it, replace your tires. If his hair is partially visible, you’ll need to consider getting tires soon. If the tread comes up past his forehead, your tires are still good, and you can continue to drive on them.

Alternatively, you can use a tread depth gauge to determine the same thing. You can download them online or buy a tool to check the tread depth.

You may also want to take your car in for repairs or adjustments if you see that the tread on your tires is wearing inconsistently. If your wheels are misaligned or the tires need rotated, you might see that one section is wearing out fast than the others and needs to be replaced.  If you are unsure about your tires do not hesitate to bring your car in to our Atlanta Car Dealership and have one of our service experts look at it.

Your Atlanta Car Needs Its Power Steering Fluid Changed

Have you started to notice recently that it isn’t as easy as it used to be to turn that steering wheel? Your issue may be found in old, dirty steering fluid. In fact, your Atlanta Car dealer, Southtowne says, if you notice that you are having to use more force to turn the wheel, or that it starts to stick, then that means that you probably need to add, or flush your power steering fluid.  Like many other parts of your car, your power steering works in tandem with a fluid that assists your power steering mechanism.  Over time, the steering fluid may get low, or become dirty and contaminated, which means you have to get rid of the old, and add in the new. Lot’s of time, you forget to check your fluids and consequently, they get low or compromised with grime and dirt. It’s probably time to do a once over on all of your fluids, specifically your power steering fluid, as this is usually the last fluid people seem to check.

This can be easily done at home, but there is more to it than taking off a cap and adding more fluid.  The video below is a great walk through on how to flush your car’s power steering fluid.

If you are noticing that you are still having problems turning your steering wheel, then you may want to take your car to a mechanic to make sure there aren’t any bigger problems.  Or better yet, why not just hop into your Atlanta car and come into your Atlanta Buick GMC, Cadillac, Chevrolet Dealer, the Southtowne General Motors Superstore. We’ll fix you up and get you back on the road in a flash.

Atlanta GM Dealer: Which Terrible Driver Are You

You share the road with them in Atlanta everyday…the terrible drivers. With the amount of recent activity in the Southtowne General Motors Superstore, I’m going to bet that for some of these these dents and dings, it wasn’t their first time being repaired. That’s OK, you don’t have to be great at everything….some people are just bad drivers. Of course, there are very few people in this world that will actually admit that they are horrible drivers. As much as it pains me to say, I’ve probably been one of them a time, or two. I found this list combined by AutoInsurance.org and added a few of my own lines in for good measure. Which are you most guilty of?

(1) The Time Waster – You know this guy. You’re waiting to make a right turn and he’s coming down the street and instead of using his blinker to let you know he’s turning before you – you sit there and waste time not knowing what he’s going to do. Or, the guy sitting at the red light, busy texting…green light….still texting…horn….still texting…HOOOOORRRRRRRN!!!!!….red light.

(2) Traffic Weavers – Pick a lane, pal! As unbelievable as it may seem, all of your traffic weaving is going to do nothing…we’ll still end up at the same red light.

(3) Light Turns Green And Nothing – See time waster.

(4) The No Reason Passer – OK, you passed me, got in front of me and slowed down? What’s up with that?

(5) I’m Officially BlindRegular lights, use them. Thanks. No, seriously, if you have to use your brights, and there are times when we do, be courteous and shut them off for on coming traffic.

(6) The Snail / The Bullet – “Have you ever noticed that anyone driving slower than you is an idiot, and anyone going faster than you is a maniac?” – George Carlin

(7) Widespread Panic – That’s it, you can come over, I see your blinker. We have established communication and I have left a sizable gap to fit into. HEY! YOU!!! YEAH YOU< GO!!!! If you are timid, make the decision then commit to that decision, i guarantee you, you will be a better driver for it.

(8) Oh Will You Look At That – I know, with all of the distractions that are roadside these days, we don’t need to be making it worse by rubbernecking. Just go, mind your own business and stop adding to a potential traffic issue. When you brake to slow to look at an minor accident or something, you are making everyone else behind you slow down too. Just go. Just go.

(9) The Permanent Blinker – Are you going, or aren’t you? Pay attention to your instrument cluster now and again and you may find that you’ve been warning everyone of your potential right turn for the last 15 miles, or so.

(10) The Ones That Enter The Parking Lot – It’s OK to enter a parking lot faster than a 1.5 mph. Also see (6).

OK, this was all in good fun. I know that we are all guilty of being those drivers in the list above. So, now that you know, maybe you can focus a little more on being a better driver.Your Atlanta GM dealer, Southtowne would rather see better drivers and see your cars in here.

How Often Do You Clean Your Windows Southtowne?

HeyAtlanta Cars owners, the Southtowne General Motors Superstore wants to know: are you one of the people who forget about the windows when your detailing your car? If you are, don’t worry. You’re not alone. A lot of people forget about cleaning their windows. It’s funny because the windows are actually one of the only things on your car you really should keep clean because it obviously helps improve visibility.

Another thing a lot of people forget is that household cleaners should never be used to clean auto glass because almost all of them contain ammonia, and we want to avoid using them in enclosed areas like our cars. So if you’re thinking about grabbing the Windex from under your sink right now, stop right there!

On the other hand, you don’t really want to use plain water either. Though it is the safe method, water alone is not enough of a solvent to cut through the protein base of those tough spots like bug remains. Using a glass-cleaning mircofiber towel, on the other hand, will definitely get the job done and it’s super easy to use. Simply dampen the towel with an ammonia-free cleaner (there are several brands dedicated to auto glass) and clean the glass in circular movements. Then find a dry side of the towel, and use it to buff out every last little streak.

Now that you know what you’ll need to clean the windows, let’s talk guidelines. First and foremost, always start with detailing your vehicle. That way, you won’t risk getting fingerprints or other residue on your clean windows while washing the car.

Avoid washing the windows in the sun. The sun can cause water to evaporate too quickly leaving residue. You’ll also want to spend some extra time on the windshield because you rely on this piece of glass more than any other. The same goes for the back window, as well.

Finally, don’t forget to roll down the door windows to get the tops of the glass, and remember, you won’t always get everything the first time. So take your time and the sit back and enjoy your handy work.

Atlanta Cars, Get You Timing Right For Increased Performance

Have you experienced a lag when your GMC, Buick or Cadillac shifts gears? You may have a timing issue. First let me say that Southtowne Motors can easily adjust the timing in your vehicle. Or, you can do it yourself, but let me warn you, setting the timing on your engine is one of the most misunderstood adjustments you can make, not that it’s hard, it’s just that your average commuter probably doesn’t even know that having your cylinders fire at the right time actually increases the performance of your new car. Then there’s that pesky timing belt you’ll need to look at.

The information on this video will help you understand and answer all of your questions about ignition timing much better than I can explain it in this blog.

I used to have an older SUV (not too old) which had a significant lag when switching between first and second gears. So much so that it was nearly a full second before the gears engaged. Having your engine so far out of time not only can put added wear on your cylinders and timing belt, but a mistimed engine can seriously decrease your fuel efficiency. In regards to fuel prices, this is critical, as we are approaching the $4 a gallon mark again. Nothing can put a dent in your wallet and a frown on your face when you realize that the timing issue with your cylinders firing appropriately is costing you money.

If you think you are experiencing a timing issue, bring your vehicle into our Newnan service department and we’ll fix it for you in a flash.

Every now and then, I’ll come across something unique that I just have to share. It’s an older story, but that certainly doesn’t lessen the drama. So, this post isn’t about, changing your oil or rotating your tires or even Southtowne Motors, per se. It is about 1 fearless individual who risked his own life to save the life of others.

The footage you are about to see was recorded in a gas station in Turkey. The tanker truck caught fire while filling the underground fuel reserve. The cause of the fire was blamed on static electricity . As you can see in the video the people who saw the fire expanding rapidly started running away, fearing an imminent explosion.

However, Engin Kocak, the truck driver, felt he had the duty to do something. He first attempted to put out the fire with an extinguisher. Quickly realizing that the blaze was too powerful for that,  he got in the cabin…yes the cabin of his truck attached to 1,000’s of gallons of fuel and drove the truck away from the station, risking his own life in order to save the lives of others.

Here’s a quote from carscoop.

“The fuel tank went up in flames instantly. At that moment, I said, ‘Let something happen to me, instead of the people nearby,’ and got behind the wheel. The tank turned into a ball of flames, but I managed to take it to a secure place. But some cars were burned as a result of the flames jumping from the tank,” said the driver, who reportedly jumped off the truck to save his life when he arrived in a safe area, 1 kilometer away from the gas station.

Thanks to Kocak’s heroic actions, no one was hurt in the incident.

I just found this a really great story and how the actions of one man save a lot of people. If you’d like to leave a comment or even share a story with Southtowne and the rest of our readers, we’d love to hear them!
